Can you vote for the “worst bridge”? Or the “worst bridge proposal”? Our historic (1899) bridge (from the mainland Bronx to City Island), deemed too expensive to preserve, is to be replaced by a horrific “modern” cable-stayed structure – a design that is absurdly inappropriate for our quaint nautical community – that’s being shoved down our throats by NYC without any of the usual local review and approval process. Needless to say, this is being fought tooth-and-nail by the islanders. Currently, our local politicians and activists have halted the project with a lawsuit, but we fear that as usual the powers-that-be will win in the end.
