Photo Contest: Othmar H. Ammann Awards

Do you have a favorite bridge or a top-notch bridge photograph that you want to share with other preservationists and bridge lovers? The Othmar H. Ammann Awards hosted by The Bridge Hunter’s Chronicles is the contest for you.

The contest is named after an internationally known bridge engineer, who immigrated to the US from Switzerland and left his legacy for the next generations to awe in wonder.

The categories are:

• Bridge of the Year Award

The Author’s Choice Awards are:

• Best and Worst Examples of Historic Bridge Reuse

Join Me for a Preservation Lecture in Wilmington

Live at 5:25 – CCTV with Preservation Burlington

Today at 5:25pm, I’ll be joining Preservation Burlington on their monthly TV show to talk about social media + historic preservation. Watch it LIVE or catch it at another time in the Preservation Burlington CCTV archive (this episode).

Social media + historic preservation is a topic near and dear to my heart, of course, and I’m excited to join the hosts, Ron Wanamaker & Liisa Reimann, and another guest, Erin Barnaby of the Shelburne Museum.

While I love presentations, I’ve never been on live TV, so fingers crossed for a good first TV experience! If you have suggestions for TV appearances, let me know in the comments. Cheers!

#PastForward: Emerging Professionals

Who will be at the Past Forward (National Trust) conference this week? Some people are already on their way. I’m looking forward to the many intriguing sessions (urban-centric, federal policies, etc.), meeting new preservation friends and catching up with old friends.

I’m very excited to be speaking at the conference this year! Join me on Wednesday November 4, for the session, “Emerging Professionals in Historic Preservation.” The session runs from 1-4pm, and it’s divided into three mini sessions, so you can stop in for one talk, two, or all three. I’ll be speaking on “Engaging Millennials,” “Technology +Historic Preservation,” and “(A)Typical Careers in Preservation.” After each talk, the floor opens for a roundtable discussion.

Come to listen, come with questions! The Emerging Professionals group has some fun planned, too, so it’s more than just listening and talking.We’re looking for those emerging professionals, but also seasoned professionals who have advice to share or want to meet some new people.

Slight Appearance Update

Good morning all,

I’ve been wanting to try a new blog look for a while — pardon the theme and layout changes while I work on that. There is not a way to do it behind the scenes and not publicize it. I realize this is not exciting work for some. But if you like talking blog design, layout, such things, I’d love to ask you a few questions, and to hear your answers.

What do you think of the Preservation in Pink logos? The former banner logo? The small logo? Both have been around for years. I’ve always liked them, but maybe a fresh look is good? Bloggers and others, when is the appropriate time to update a logo?

Small changes right now: social media links / email / etc can be found via buttons on the button of the home page. Scroll down. And some of the sidebar widgets have been moved to the bottom footer areas.

Shopping Season: AmazonSmile

Did you avoid Black Friday or embrace it? How about Small Business Saturday? My Instagram and Twitter feeds were overflowing with fun images of local shopping. What will you do for Cyber Monday? In our world, many people shop online because of the wider variety available (basically everything) or the convenience or the prices (sometimes true, sometimes not). Online shopping can mean local businesses or small businesses online, websites like Etsy, or, of course, Amazon.

My confession: I shop online, sometimes at Amazon. It’s easy to find anything. Sigh. It’s conflicting. But, I’d still choose Amazon over Walmart. Does anyone else feel that way? Well, here’s something to make you feel a bit better.

If you’re shopping on Amazon on Cyber Monday (or any day, actually) consider going to www.smile.amazon.com. Why? Because if you choose a charitable organization, then 0.5% of your purchase will go to that organization. In Vermont, you can choose the Preservation Trust of Vermont. When you choose your charity, type in “preservation” and many organizations come up for your choosing. The trick is to always remember to sign into AmazonSmile. Read the FAQs here. It’s easy, and no additional cost to you, and will help your favorite organization. Happy shopping!

In Savannah at the National Historic Preservation Conference

This week is the annual National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference in Savannah, GA. If you’re in with the social media crowd (anyone can be, jump on!) you’ll see the hashtag #presconf and #pastforward. If you see that this week, you’ll know that person is hanging out with a couple of thousand preservationists in Savannah. It’s warm and sunny and beautiful, and I’m looking forward an intense few days of preservation overload, in the best possible way. Already, I’ve been touring Georgia with some of my Vermont preservation colleagues and we’ve had a blast and some true southern experiences. I hope you don’t mind picture overload! Get ready for more this week.

If you’re not able to be here in Savannah, the NTHP has made it easier to join from afar. Check out these live streaming events. Register (free) so you can get your virtual attendance packets. Hope you enjoy. Let me know how it goes! 

One part of the conference includes the exhibitor’s hall, at which preservation minded businesses, organizations, and schools set up camp to chat with conference goers and let everyone know what they have to offer. This week it is my pleasure to share with you the Historic Bridge Foundation. Read on in the next post.
