Sometimes they are still in service in areas where the cell reception is patchy or completely unavailable, but I used to live in a region of NH where there was no cell service AND all the pay phones had been removed. It was mostly inhabited by seasonal-only homeowners, so anyone who had a car breakdown, etc was out of luck in winter until a state trooper happened by. There was some protest to the phone company, but nothing done about it for a while; now there is cell service there.
They STILL have payphones??!! I haven’t seen one around here for the longest time.
