    multiple layers of paint were unsuccesfully removed? can’t tell if it was sandblasted or some sort of high-pressure water/chemical method. Also looks like it may have been repointed badly in that the joints are flush and look Portland-ish.

    actually, the cracking at the joints make me think the mortar must have been more of a lime-heavy mortar.
