Preservation pop quiz: Who wants to take a guess as to what happened to this brick wall? (The brick dates to ca. early 1800s, but is a veneer to a ca. 1785 wood frame beneath it.) Click for a larger image.
multiple layers of paint were unsuccesfully removed? can’t tell if it was sandblasted or some sort of high-pressure water/chemical method. Also looks like it may have been repointed badly in that the joints are flush and look Portland-ish.

actually, the cracking at the joints make me think the mortar must have been more of a lime-heavy mortar.
