Spring in the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect time for fieldwork and outside preservation activities such as building monitoring. It’s warm, sunny, and the insects aren’t swarming just yet. Occasionally I can put aside oral history work for a few hours and participate in a few site visits and other fun tasks. As good preservationists, we always take along a camera. These historic properties deserve stewardship; you can’t find these just anywhere.
For information on the Ranger Station read Range Riders and Game Wardens: A Brief History of Fort Bragg’s Forest Ranger Program. For information on the historic churches at Fort Bragg, see the Cultural Resources website. Military installations include history far beyond that of just military operations – from agricultural to 18th – 20th century communities to Native American life.
